The regular archery/crossbow season began at Fort McCoy on September 18th, coinciding with the opening of the Wisconsin archery season.

"There's always a break in the archery season during the gun deer season, which this year runs from November 20 to the 28," said David Beckmann, a wildlife biologist with the Natural Resources Division of the Public Works Department of Environmental Protection (NRB).

A Fort McCoy archery license and a Wisconsin bow or crossbow hunting license are required at Fort McCoy for regular archery/crossbow hunting, Beckmann said. Harvest is limited to one deer (antlered or antlerless) with the appropriate deer harvest permit issued with your Fort McCoy archery license. Fort McCoy archery permits can be purchased from iSportsman at https://ftmccoy.isportsman.net or at the permit sales office during regular business hours.
Archery hunters should also note that when hunting with both a bow and arrow, they must have the appropriate Wisconsin bow/crossbow license. "The update allows you to use either, otherwise you have to choose between using the bow or the crossbow," he said.
Standard archery licenses in Wisconsin cost $24 for resident archery and $24 for local crossbow. Upgrade is an additional $3. A Fort McCoy regular archery/crossbow permit is $17. Wisconsin hunting licenses are sold through the Wisconsin GoWild website for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at https://gowild.wi.gov.

Fort Mccoy Housing: 1 On Post Option
Beckmann said about 800 archery licenses are purchased for Fort McCoy each year, and hunters have a success rate of about 15 to 20 percent. He said that during the archery season, an average of 90-100 deer are harvested on the pole each year.
"We have a lot of great opportunities and locations for bow hunters to find success," Beckmann said. "Due to the mild winter and abundant food sources, our deer population seems healthy, and the fawns are doing very well. Hunters will have plenty of options this year as well.
The stocking will again average at least 30 deer per square mile this fall, which Beckmann says will be good for hunters. "We wish them the best of luck," he said.
Archery hunters are advised that the use of tree stands or blinds is only temporary and must be removed daily. Also, if hunters are successful in harvesting a deer, they must register the deer on the Fort McCoy iSportsman website.

Fort Mccoy Names New Garrison Deputy Commander
The nearly 1,200 hunters who checked in and out of the Fort McCoy Forest harvested fewer than 300 deer in the 2020 postseason, said David Beckmann, Wildlife Program Manager and biologist, Natural Resources Division of the Public Works Department of Environmental Protection.
The 2020 harvest is similar to 2019, Beckmann said. About 100 deer were transported to the station to collect the age and biological data of the deer in 2020. Due to the 2020 epidemic, hunters had the opportunity to take their deer to the collection station.
"The data collected at the station is important for assessing herd health and calculating stocked deer populations," Beckmann said. "We collect important age and health data. We also collect lymph nodes to diagnose chronic wasting disease (CWD).
For the 2021 deer hunt, Beckmann said the biological data collection/recording station will again be in South Post, the same location off Highway 21 as in previous years. Collected CWD samples are sent to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and all successful hunters are encouraged to test their deer.

Beckmann said the 2021 deer harvest goal is also between 300 and 350 deer — the same as 2020. Bonus tags are not available this season.
"We hold these hunts so that we can continue to effectively manage our deer population," Beckmann said. "Archery hunting and gun deer hunting are our best means of maintaining a healthy deer population for posterity and minimizing impacts on endangered species, forest regeneration and rangeland."
To participate in the installation firearms hunt, hunters must apply for a Fort McCoy permit on the Fort McCoy iSportsman website at https://ftmccoy.isportsman.net and then purchase the permits through iSportsman, Beckmann said. You can usually register for deer hunting at the end of June each year. If you are interested, please contact the License Sales Office for more information.
In addition, hunters coming to the installation must have an annual Wisconsin deer license. Wisconsin licenses can be sold through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) GoWild system at https://gowild.wi.gov or through a designated WDNR GoWild agent.

A Fort McCoy armed deer permit is $21 and a Wisconsin resident armed deer permit is $24.
Fort McCoy hunters are not required to register their harvested deer with WDNR, but must register all harvested deer through the iSportsman check-out process, Beckmann said.
Beckmann said Fort McCoy's deer population should continue to provide hunters with much bigger bucks.
"There's a lot of money out there," Beckmann said. "Last year, we had very nice eight- and ten-point things arrive at the station. This season is also closer to the appearance of the normal deer visit (mating season), which also means that we will see a higher success rate."

Beckmann added that the 2021 deer roadside surveys showed a healthy deer population, and he expects a lot of people to hunt.
"We've made 1,800 permits available for this year's deer season," Beckmann said. "I expect at least 1,400 to 1,500 hunters to actually come out and sign up to hunt at some point during the season."
Hunters should also note that Fort McCoy requires that all privately owned firearms brought onto the facility be registered through the Emergency Services Director of Physical Security. This includes all federal areas, including training and housing areas.
