Winner of the 2019 American Hunter Golden Bullseye Award, the Taurus Raging Hunter is a next-generation big-bore revolver that is first in innovation and built to last. This 44 Magnum six-shot revolver is a fun and effective choice for short to medium range hunting. It is available in matte black or two-tone finish. Its revolutionary angled barrel design reduces overall weight, while factory-tuned transition and gas expansion chambers reduce muzzle rise for faster target acquisition. Padded insert grips provide a comfortable, manageable shooting experience.

The Raging Hunter family of revolvers has been out for a little over a year now, and I have yet to see one in person in my travels to the show. I, like many of us, had checked them out on the internet but failed to make mine the one and only

Until now Before I opened up this revolver and started tearing down the range, I had a lot of thoughts.

All black and stainless parts and finishes on various parts blend well for an attractive look. There's also a red stripe running down the back of the rubber grip, and it still looks great with this mix of colors; No

On most double-action wheel guns with rotating barrels, you can expect just one barrel locking tab, which is more than enough. As with the Raging Hunter, it actually uses two cylinder locking loops, which was a surprise to me. When you start to consider that this revolver is only 5 pounds unloaded, the double barrel locking lugs make perfect sense. It is a hefty revolver not only in terms of weight, but also with the overall footprint.

Another prominent feature of this .44 Magnum is the Picatinny rail that runs almost the entire length of the barrel. While many people can shoot fairly accurately at significant distances with iron sights, the ability to add an RMR, pistol scope, or other optics is a great option available to you as a shooter and/or hunter.

The last element that caught my eye before shooting this revolver was the rubber grip. FYI, I consider myself to have average sized hands and this grip is definitely thick. Shooting a revolver will be the ultimate test of whether or not the grip is too big, so let's see how my range session went with the Raging Hunter .44 Magnum pistol.

For my trip to the range, I shot 2 different (yet similar) boxes of ammo by the Taurus Raging Hunter. I had a dusty box of Federal American Eagle .44 Magnum 240 grain jacketed hollow-point (JHP) that, judging by the artwork on the box, I have no idea how old it was (20 years? 30 years? Your guess is better than mine). ). The second box of ammo I brought to the range was the same flavor from Federal, but brand new, purchased hours before my trip. So, I photograph old and young, old and fresh, maybe thin and fat.

With old ammo that I occasionally buy very cheaply at area gun shows, the ammo always "works", it's just that old ammo is like medicine: it doesn't expire, it loses its potency over time. takes It was exactly the same as the one I brought with me to test. The old ammo had significantly lighter recoil than the modern, but still had the same point of impact (POI) at the distance I was shooting at (15-25 yards).

The longer barrel length and extra change at the tip made this revolver very easy to recoil. Between the 8.37-inch carry barrel and 55-ounce weight (unloaded), it didn't blow me away, but it was a lot of fun to shoot. The light recoil allowed me to really focus on the trigger and shoot this gun as accurately as possible.

The single action has a bit of a hard wall before the trigger breaks, but it breaks very cleanly. I didn't have a trigger pull gauge with me at the range, but if I had to make a rough guess (take it with a grain of salt), it was probably around 4-5 pounds. The double-action trigger pull is a lot easier than I expected, and the travel before it breaks is also a bit short. Again as an anecdotal estimate, I would put the double action trigger pull at around 10-11 pounds. As a primary or secondary weapon for hunting, I could see it being a handy weapon when out of holster and used in double action.

My first groups fired with the revolver were nothing to write home about, but as long as I was able to work and practice with the trigger (about 20 rounds or so), I strengthened my groups very quickly. started doing Those early groups resembled a shot at 20 yards (not the shooter, I hope, but just enough). As I shot and became more comfortable with the grip, pressing the trigger and resting on the black-on-black iron sights, my groups were 1" to 2" at 20 yards. Can this revolver shoot even better out of bags? Maybe... but as a hunter by trade, I like to shoot as much as I do in the field. So I was very happy with these results.

Is The .357 Magnum The Most Versatile Handgun?

So, after loving this revolver, pumping old and new ammo, and some time to reflect...what are my final thoughts? I have a lot of positive things to say and only a few negative ones. Overall, I was very impressed with the performance, handling and style of this double action pistol. Its appearance is excellent between black, silver and red accents. It takes better pictures than my ability to ever show on paper, which is amazing. I'd rather have limitations limiting my group size as a shooter than a lemon cannon (which it most certainly isn't a lemon).

The long barrel, carry and overall weight make it the easiest shooting. 44 Magnum that I have played with. And while I am not putting any optics on this revolver, if I were to commit to hunting with it, I would certainly do so and appreciate that it has a factory integrated rail; No weapon crafting or shade tree mechanics required.

A few minor downsides to the Raging Hunter are its large size. Do I think its overall footprint is too big for me to carry? Definitely not. Will some people disagree? More than likely, yes. If you're backpacking, there are certainly lighter revolvers in .44 Magnum that you can carry, but the tradeoff for a lighter pistol is substantial. So, it's a narrow walk that everyone has to decide personally. The long barrel, carry and weight probably helped my accuracy a lot too. So, going for a smaller frame may not be the answer for everyone.

Another element of the Raging Hunter that could be improved in my opinion is the grip. Personally, I can shoot it
